The heritage buildings in Kutch are an important part of the region's character and its history. The destructive 2001 earthquake caused significant damage to many heritage and character buildings. Many of the regions most prized buildings are gone forever and many more risk demolition. All crying out for restoration, these neglected treasures, ripe for sensitive repair, often lie in idyllic locations.
Jamedar Fateh Mohammed was one of the most important royal ministers who played a very significant role in the history of Kutch. His residence is a treasure trove of architectural detail and history and is set in a picturesque position next to the old city wall, which is a heritage site in itself. This idyllic house - which dates back to the 19th century has been empty and derelict for the past decade and continues to cry out for a new owner and a new life.Though the building suffered minimum damage due to the earthquake,it risks decay because of neglect. Once restored this handsome stucture could easily be converted into a Heritage hotel or a museum.
The message is simple- act now, or loose a jewel forever.
