Conversations with Ebony

ah!...the smell of mud from the first monsoon showers of the year, the sun rising over the eastern horizon its  rays gently falling on the tiny white flowers blooming in my mothers neatly manicured lawn . I shut the main door behind me took a whiff of the strong coffee I had in my right hand, picked up the newspaper that lay on the front poarch in the other as I sat down on the front steps with a smile on my face...

This was my favorite time of the day..
When the neighbourhood was still fast asleep ,the only sound that could be heard was of the koel cooing in its stupour and the occasional bark of a dog as the neighbourhood newspaper boy cycled past flinging a newspaper without even a second glance at the house as it fell perfectly on the doormat
..it was a routine I had been following for almost a year now...jus me my hot cup of coffee and my thoughts...I looked at the lawn and at what seemed like million little jewels scattered overthe lush green grass..

It seemed like the rain that was long awaited for ,after the two terrible months of sweltering heat was not liked by all ...for it brought out a certain someone out of its hiding place ...a certain someone who later became a confidant of my secrets ,thoughts and opinions.....

I was too busy enjoying the heat of the sun falling on my face and the fresh cool breeze blowing to notice anythig unusual..I probably could have sat there for hours and not notice the beautiful being that sat next to me....it was only when the neighbours cat that was walking around aimlessly on our driveway stopped a couple  of meters before me her tail rising up forming a perfect curve and as i watched her bare al her teeth a nasty hiss escaping her mouth while every strand on the feline body stood up i asked innocently "what did i do?"

it was only then that i noticed something out of the corner of my eye move..i spun my head to my right and gasped  ....it was the most beautiful being id ever seen...the colour of the midnight sky on a moonless night, the tiny scales on its long elegant body shimmered in the morning sun as it gracefully uncoiled itself and slithered away into the nearby hedge...i stared at the vacant spot next to me rewinding the happening of the past 60 seconds again in my head...after a couple of seconds the only word that escaped my lips were...WOW!!

I sat there for another half an hour slowly sipping on the coffee and making a mental note of all the things i needed to do in the day..one of which was google the name of long black snake found that could be found in a rocky city like Secunderabad.

The day went on like usual..i went to shower 20mins early and came out 5 mins late...skipped breakfast and ran out of my house tie and watch in one hand bottle and tiffin in the other and what seemed like an entire sandwhich that my mother managed to shove in my mouth as i was running out of the door...

I came back home exhausted...watched tv...surfed the net...did my work and hit the sack...

The next day I got up early yet again....having completely forgotten the happening of the previous morning...
