Embroidery..

Il be leaving for a project with a Handicrafts NGO in Bhuj soon...how sooon i'm not sure...but soon:) ....Since il be dealing mostly with the embroidery department I dug up my 4th semester files on Traditional Embroideries of India to do some brushing up!

These are the 5 embroideries I chose to study...


Embroidery is widely practiced throughout India with different stylistic variations that serve to distinguish the workmanship of one region from that of another.


Kashida-Kashmir



KASHIDAKARI- KASHMIRI EMBROIDERY


->Ari work -chain stitches (shawls,kurta,pheran,upholstery, ) 
->Sozni-delicate needle work(shawls,garments)
->Rezkar-similar to Szni but with longer stitches
->Tilla and Dori work-executed with silver and gold thread(pheran,sari,shawls)

  

Chikinkari -Lucknow



CHIKANKARI-EMBROIDERY OF LUCKNOW

Subtle embroidery,white on white,in which minute and delicate stitches stand out as textural contrasts,shadows and traceries.Some stitches are worked from the back of the fabric,some from the front



KASUTI EMBROIDERY-KARNATAKA
An amalgamation of the double running stich,(Gavanti), zig-zag stitch( Muragi), darning stich (Menthe) Traditionally, this embroidery technique was used on fabrics related to rituals of marraige,childbirth and festivities.

Banjara Embroidery


BANJARA EMBROIDERY-RAJASTHAN             

Different pattern, geometric combinations and motifs are sewed with different stitches.The use of mirrors,vibrant colours ,shells and beads creates a kaleidoscopic ensemble


KANTHA EMBROIDERY-WEST BENGAL

Patched ,quilted and vividly embroidered with colourful threads in simple running stitch

Fabric surface ornamentation was my favorite  subject in college (only after History of Costumes of ‘course )…
