Children of the meadows

ribbons of hope
wrapped like petals of spring
with each stitch of inner power
blooms this wildflower

The wildflower project started randomly. Rani, one of the residents daughter was bored of doing nothing in her Diwali vacations ( yes they are still on!!) between my work I taught her how to make plaited ribbons and simple fabric flowers out of waste strips of cloth. She was quick in picking up and when she had made a handful I taught her how to make hair accessories out of them. She was thrilled with the output and excitedly ran around the campus showing off to everyone. The next morning she had already made a dozen odd flowers and asked if I could teach her more. While we were making new flowers on the steps of the stitching unit some of the weavers asked if I could teach them how to make these fabric flowers too. I said 'ofcourse' , but I wasnt very sure if I could. Simple as they are to make it requires one to check the design from time to time. Cupping my hand into half a sphere I explained to them how the flower should be shaped, I verbally illustrated how we would proceed and before I could demonstrate they had already begun experimenting.  I have seen how meticulously they weave, how intelligent and independent they are, but I was absolutely shocked by how quickly they picked up the art of making fabric flowers, making samples way better than my own. I was amazed! and embarrassed that I had undermined them, thinking they would not be able to do the task.
